About Charles Taggart

Am in the progress of getting back into the world of web design, my artwork and marketing, after taking a sabbatical from local web and custom artwork business. So, time to get back at what I truly enjoy and use my talent and all that degree’s and research I have been doing…

Slowly with a small business plan, I’ll create a foundation social network for the website I have been sketching out to create for offering Web Site Design and adding Web 2.0 social networking to small business sites…

Charles Taggart, EzineArticles.com Basic Author

While I was at Syracuse University, I was an art Director for a small game company and my marketing brought forth what is now the SU Orangeman, which was originally a board game logo, but it’s popularity gained allot of momentum and the university gained ownership through the success of my marketing the logo after the game came out (they own all rights to all employee concepts during work)… I oversaw 50+ college interns & Free-Lancers in graphic design, illustration and photography. We also did college oriented T-Shirt and soft-good designs,

Through this Game Company, I met a friend who I helped to get his sports card business from a closet hobby business to the largest mail order Sports memorabilia business on the East Coast, through adding better and more aggressive advertising campaign. Logo Design, business letterhead, business cards… Setting up and helping with Macintosh PageMaker use for Flyers, display advertising instead of Classifieds listings, and then once the client list started to grow, upping the flyers to a full monthly catalogs…

Once I finished at SU, I came back to my hometown, to try to give back to the community and to help my Mother out with the family farm. She ended up finding someone and remarried and moved to VA, and left me the farm, since I have been putting so much help and money into the property over the years.

I redid what was a chicken coop into a studio, adding electric, woodstove, refinished the building and added a skylight to it. Then moved in all of my art materials and computer equipment. I stayed out there for a few years, when I started offering website design work and web & e-mail hosting services, being the first ISP in Tioga County.

I got involved in the Candor Chamber of Commerce, from Webmaster to Director to Vise President of it… I helped to start the first Economic Development Committee for the town and founding member of Candor Biz Center, which was suppose to be a business incubator. The Chamber’s website was the first town website of the county, with a dual site within it, one highlighting the chamber and a page for it’ members and the other highlighting the town, it’s local government info and sharing photos of the Forth of July parade and fireworks, and photos of the town… While doing these things, I also created many of the first real websites for local businesses and some helped to increase their business 300-600%.

Proving that I could make in this little town with no stoplight, and all I had done for the Chamber and business community, I threw my hat into running for Tioga County Legislator. I can say I was the first Democrat to win Candor’s vote for a Legislator, but lost the other three towns in the area I would have represented. I had no idea of just how powerful the Republican Party is in Tioga County, more then 89%, and found that they would push me off of the boards I was in, and steal ideas for their own from me, or take credit for them… I chose to take time off from local web and custom artwork to work with a friend doing carpentry…

After I received a small inheritance, after my Grandparents had passed away. I invested some of the money in my property, tools and new computer equipment… I started to study the use of Web 2.0; it’s networking for advertising, while starting to work with a friend, doing home and barn renovations. This went on till last fall, when I realized my friend had a closet habit, and it was effecting his family, friends and work, with his not communicating with the clients we had, loosing a huge amount of work. This past year, I tried to do more carpentry work on my own, but with the economy being so harsh, my bids where underbid by others and people went with the cheapest bids instead of quality work, and didn’t receive much local work… So chose to get back into Web Design and custom artwork again…

I’ve also chosen to change directions, and work towards my life goal, of finding a place to start an Internet café, and possibly somewhere a bit warmer… I visited my Mom near Chincoteague VA, and fell in love with the little town there, and it’s wild ponies… I have chosen to start to fix up my family farm to sell it, and move down there to start the Internet café. I had given myself 2 years to do this last spring, but now with this recession and horrible house market and a problem with my health (An Unnecessarily Long Journey Back to Health: http://bit.ly/dgOHN6) I am now thinking it might take me a bit longer to achieve this goal.

Once I finish renovating my farm property to sell, I plan on moving to Chincoteague, VA, to start up the internet café, where I will not only be serving Coffee’s, espresso’s and cappuccino’s and small sandwiches of sorts, but hope to also sell my artwork and start to create limited edition prints of the wild ponies and surrounding area’s wildlife and lighthouse of Chincoteague… The Café will also be Wi-Fi able, and have a few computers in it for time rental… This will not only be a place to rent computers and get access to the Internet, but also hope to create local business accounts, for hosting hard-drive space, e-mail and websites for local small business and families, to help them save money with computers, software and the earning curve of updating computers… I plan to have classes to teach how to sell things online, increase advertising and work with Social networking to increase sales…

My hope is that once I get the café going well, I will be able to get one of the abandoned properties that has fallen off the local tax maps there, and renovate it… A property that has enough acreage for a small barn, large garden and to be able to add a greenhouse to the house- 5-25 acres… Hope to add both solar heating to it and to be able to grow veggies and Dahlia’s and other flowers gardens and enough acreage to raise some beef cattle… If all works out, I hope to be able too spend slower winters possibly in Italy, and continue doing my own artwork…

  1. Hi Charles,
My name is Davis Shaver. I am the Executive Editor of Onward State, a student-run blog focused on Penn State. I have a running Twitter search for any mentions of Penn State, and read your tweets about the Penn State Wrestler/ Football man who grows dahlias.

I am very interested in getting in touch with him, either for a feature on Onward State or for a project a participate in that looks for unusual stories from Penn State people.

I couldn’t find a better way to contact you, so I hope this works.

I look forward to hearing from you.

  2. Thanks for posting this very helpful information; I happened to come to your blog just searching around the web. Please keep up the good work!

    • Dear Davis Shaver,

Yes, that would be my high school history teacher, Roger Miller, now retired… He was an all state High School wrestling champion and received a full Wrestling Scholarship to your school, but went into Korean war instead, where he was in a camp of 500 US soldiers when a major assault of the NV when they attacked with over 2000 men, he was one of the 8 total that survived- if I recall correctly…

He went to Pen State as a Vet but couldn’t wrestle and instead and also was a kicker for your football team… He’s also in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for Lifetime Service To Wrestling in 2003- http://www.wrestlinghalloffame.org/bio.php?id=913

Roger is also one of the Best Dahlia Growers in the country and a Judge for the American Dahlia Society… I am sure if you look in the Penn State alumni records you will be able to locate information about him and how to get in contact with him… He also often goes to the football games there… Very interesting person to meet and hear his stories of his life… You should look him up and interview him- he’s some wonderful stories about Penn State!!! Am proud to have known him view him as a father figure…

This started out a Practice Business Blog with a bit of an introduction about my own life and those who touched my life or influenced me…
