Gander Mountain seems to be Twitter Challenged…

Those who know me, know that besides my being an Artist and am very good at Marketing/Advertising and my use of what is now called Social Media, that I am an avid Outdoorsmen, enjoying hunting, fishing, hiking and camping… I also often shop at Gander Mountain in Johnson City, NY for my outdoors needs since they opened their store there…  I have bought camping equipment, tent, sleeping bag, cooking supplies, fishing gear and hunting equipment there, many hiking boots, hunting cloths and hunting equipment & supplies such as my .50 caliber inline muzzle loader…  I even called them recently as I had need of supplies for this coming hunting season and they where very helpful!!!

Hunting photo of me while hunting whitetail deer in Central New York State with my CVA .50 Caliber Muzzleloader CVA Magna that I bought at Gander Mountain…

That being said, after I called Gander Mountain the other day, I looked them up on Twitter, then on Facebook…  I found it very interesting; I have more Twitter followers then one of my favorite outdoors shops- @GanderMtn… So I started to look into it from a Marketer & Advertising viewpoint, since that is part of my studio services…

As an artist who has designed many websites in the past locally in my small town without a stoplight with business sites increasing their sales of up to 1200+% and a hunting lodge that received two calls before I had the opportunity to drive the 5 miles to show him the hunting lodge area updates to his site, and also the marketing behind a Major University Cartoon logo that was originally just a game logo- I do know my way around the internet & marketing…

So I used some basic tools online to look a bit deeper into their online presents…  Their Website: www.gandermountain.com received 1,088,251 Unique Visitors out of 1,656,435 Total Visits during the month of September 2010…  These stats I gained through using Compete.com website…

Using WhenDidYouJoinTwitter.com I was able to find out when they joined Twitter…  They joined Twitter on January 22, 2009 and now have 1,869 people they follow and 3,724 who follow them on Twitter and with only 254 tweets since their starting the account…

I joined twitter on December 8, 2008, and now (as I am writing this) have 5,388 people I follow, 4,900+ people who follow me and have tweeted 24,383 times…  Not bad for an artist in a town without a stoplight that will soon be re-opening my studio & services next month…

Of the 165 million users of Twitter, there should be more followers that go to Gander Mountain and use Twitter then are following them… With so many visitors to their website each month, visit their stores and even their Facebook Fan page, I believe they should have far more people following them on Twitter and should be posting far more often then they do…  Though I am not going to give here all of my recommendations on how to use Social Media in Marketing…

They do have a great Facebook Fan page with 77,812 people who “like” their Fan page…  Though I haven’t looked much into their Facebook use as I think this is not too bad with their following or “Like” of their fan page, but could use some improvement seeing how Facebook has over 500 million users… I also haven’t noticed any sidebar advertising in Facebook from Gander Mountain…  Which I should have with knowing they set up reverse searches based on the subjects and fan pages people follow…

Whom ever is handling Gander Mountain’s Twitter account and Social seem to me to be a bit “Social Media Challenged”… Seems to me their missing a HUGE opportunity in their using Social Media in marketing for Gander Mountain…  Though I will not say here how to improve their Twitter or Social Media followers…

I’m posting this, with hopes others in Twitter and FaceBook will also Re-tweet it and ask the Gander Mountain Advertising Department if they might be interested in hiring me to help with their Twitter account and with their Social Media online presence…

So with this in mind, I offer to Gander Mountain Advertising Department my personal Cell Number to give me a call- (607) 229-5600…

Please be advised this next two months I might be working on re-opening my studio or will be out in the Great Outdoors!!! It is Small Game & Turkey Hunting Season here in Central NY State and Deer Season right around the corner… So I might have my cell phone on vibrate only and might be whispering so as not to scare the game away…

Do Small Business,Organizations and Government Understand Social Media?

When the Internet was only between Colleges and Universities, I was on line back then in 1989 and have had a chance to see a lot of changes since it’s beginning.  One thing hasn’t changed, many small Business, Originations, and local Government in Small Town America doesn’t seem to understand how to use the Internet effectively for effective communication or as a marketing tool…

The University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business looked at the relationship between social media and small businesses and found that the technology adoption rates in the U.S. have doubled in the past year from 12% to 24%.  That’s a good percent, but that means 76% aren’t… The data comes from the university’s third installment to its Small Business Success Index report and is based on a December 2009 telephone survey of 500 small business owners. Adoption rate calculations are compared against a baseline report conducted in December 2008. The study concludes that nearly one in five small business owners are integrating social media into their business processes — Facebook and LinkedIn were the most popular sites. 45% of surveyed respondents even believe their social media initiatives will pay off financially in 12 months or less.

The University looked at how many where using it, but they failed to look a bit deeper…  What number of those 24% of 500 businesses where really set up and using it correctly?

So many Business and Organizations are setting up personal pages instead of Business/Organization pages or what is called “Fan Pages”, as FaceBook has a few different formats for different uses…

I look online and see many small business websites that have a Facebook follow link and many have a FaceBook accounts…  But when I click through it, I find they have a personal account set up for their Business or Organization instead of a Business Account…  Even in larger towns and cities, I find this problem…  Even though they do have some Social Media formats set up, many are set up incorrectly or not at all…

With the opt-in of followers of FaceBook, it can allow a business or small town Government or tourist department to have their news, service or events highlighted to those who follow them online and even those that use smart phones…

Wouldn’t you if you had a smartphone want to find out that the local restaurant is having a lunch special, or local school where your kids are attending want to find out that they are playing a football game, arts show or concert?  Or what of local Government, wouldn’t it be nice to not have to look through the local newspaper to find out there is a meeting on gas drilling or property tax hike meeting?  If only 24% of Small business are implementing Social Media into their online presents, how much news and information isn’t being shared that your local community would be interested in?

The tools are there; it is just a massive lack of understanding of what kind, how or when to use them…  Which of the different tools to use and how to set them up correctly for the most effective ability of basic communications and marketing…  Like to try to use a hand saw to drive a spike nail, Business and Originations need to learn how to use the different Social Media tools to drive home their communications and marketing services correctly for the best results…

If you’re a Small Business Owner, do some reading and research first…  Since FaceBook is one of the most used in the world, with over 500 million users, I recommend this Social Media service as being the first step into using Social Media…  Even if you don’t have a website, setting up a FaceBook account for Business, Organizations and Local Governments is the place to start…

To do this, I would also recommend hiring someone who TRULY understands and uses Social Media…  First ask the person your hiring what they know of FaceBook, if they truly understand the different types of accounts FaceBook offers…  Then look up their Twitter account- do they have good numbers of followers, do they engage those they follow and who follow them, do they just post links or highlight about information about themselves like they are going to go get coffee?  Twitter allows one to follow 2000 people before they start restricting a Follow ratio, I believe if they don’t have at least 2000 followers, it is my view they really don’t have much experience in truly using Twitter as a social networking…  In their FaceBook account, do they highlight news and articles of Blogs in relating to Social Media; do they engage in conversations with people that follow them? These are some good questions to ask and information to look into…

There are a lot of people who might say they are Experts or even try to teach Social Media, but are they just grabbing onto the latest Buzzword of Social Media to get your money?  Ask yourself if they truly have experience in marketing and using this type of marketing tool?  Do they have a Blog, do they have a website, do they have accounts in Twitter and FaceBook. Have they done Marketing online should be some of questions you should ask and look up…

Social Media is truly a way of Marketing, Communications, Advertising and allowing you to engage with your clients, possible clients and community…  Just because someone knows how to work on computers, doesn’t mean they understand or use Social Media correctly…  Social Media is more about Marketing and Communications then it truly is about Technology…

With a personal account with Facebook you can highlight your selling your record collection or maybe having a garage or lawn sale, even selling your car, but you can’t do business via a personal account, you can openly sell products and services through a Business account… The difference is Personal accounts in FaceBook limit you to only 5000 followers…  The Fan Page account allows you to not only sell things, but can give information about how many people look at your page…  FaceBook also has the right to cancel your personal account if they feel you are using it for Business or Organization…

Doing some research and reading your self can be time consuming, but a worthy venture…  If you don’t have a website up, and haven’t started using Social Media, try FaceBook…

Are you marketing your products towards Woman online?

Are you aiming your advertising more to women then men, maybe you should be…

In an attempt to become a better and up to date online marketer, I dove into marketing statistics, online use, buying trend stats, and online user information… What I found was very interesting!!! If you’re a man, and doing web designing, graphics, marketing and branding and/or advertising you better be thinking and trying to understand how Woman view sales and marketing, or think to get some other job!!!

As an artist and marketer in designing websites and creating advertising and custom images the need to understanding how the Internet has changed since it was created in 1989 has been a major part of my research- always try to keep up to date on trends… What I found in my research was very enlightening and has forced me to change some of my views and future research and the way I need to look for designing websites and images online…

Now I am a guy and some might even put me in that “Guy’s Guy” category, as I enjoy hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, car racing, driving fast, watching action movies and working with power tools … On an average afternoon & weekend in the fall, you will find me in the woods hunting or in my side yard using a Chainsaw and a log splitter for firewood for my home and studio… I can also be found on my off time doing carpentry, renovations to my house redoing or building things in my woodshop or on my property… So I know I understand marketing to men, but I know that I need to think to “How to Marketing to Women”…

In an attempt to get into this line of thinking or understanding how woman think, besides looking up and spending many hours reading and goggling stats, I tried a different in-depth look into the female mind from a man’s view- I threw in the 2000 American Romantic Comedy film DVD “What Woman Want” starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. Though I was not going to go so in-depth in my research as to put on toe popping red high heal stiletto shoes, nylons, makeup, miniskirt and wax my legs- I’m devoted but I am not that crazy!!!

I will admit there is a photo from my senior year of high school of my wearing a miniskirt for Powder Puff Football, where the girls wear pads and the men dress as cheerleaders and a few of my friends and I did…  I have told people that I won’t do this again until I get a chance to go to visit the land of my heritage, being a highlander of Ireland and Scotland areas… Only then I will buy a Kilt and be proud of my heritage, but a kilt is not a miniskirt!!! And NO, don’t even ask me what a Scotsmen wears under his Kilt!!!

So with wanting to understand How Woman think, I sat and watched the movie over and over… Yes it was a great movie to laugh with and at, as a “Man’s Man” gets zapped and somehow can hear the thoughts of woman in his mind… The movie is interesting as it truly shows how women think a bit different then men do… So I used this movie as a foundation leap into my understanding the mindset of Woman, before to start the research part of numbers and trying to understand how woman make their choices in why or how they buy things…

I highly recommend talking to woman online and in person, what and how they make their choices and whom they talk to in making these choices… I also recommend being ready to talk- ask questions and learn how woman make their choices, or sit back and watch how women communicate with each other… It is very different then how men tend to make choices in buying things… Women tend to like to see choices and make choices by what they like, more then by function or use, as most men tend to buy by… Men tend to make choices on what they need more by function, need and then cost and often don’t shop around… Women on the other hand will often shop around for the best price, and if they feel they got a Great price on an item, they will tell their friends… Men tend not to brag about the price as much as the function…

Women account for 85% of all Consumer Purchases in the US, including anything from autos to sneakers to computers… So if your into Marketing, Web or Graphics Design, Advertising or Branding Online, and you’re a “man”, you truly need to try to get into the mind set and understanding of what and why women buy things online and how they are influenced to come to their choices…

Women represent the majority of the online market:

* Digital Divas By The Numbers:*

• 22% shop online at least once a day
• 92% pass along information about deals or finds to others
• 171: average number of contacts in their e-mail or mobile lists
• 76% want to be part of a special or select panel
• 58% would toss a TV if they had to get rid of one digital device (only 11% would ditch their laptops)
• 51% are moms
*Mindshare/Ogilvy & Mather

If you aren’t aiming your advertising, imaging and changing your marketing techniques more towards women then men, adding more clear photos of the items or even video or turn around panoramic of the items you are marketing online, maybe you should be…

Is the Digital Divide in Rural America Because of News?

Small Town America, the true backbone of our country is quickly falling behind the Digital Divide in using New Media and Social Networks for business- is part of it because of lack of news coverage?  I have been finding that there is little to no coverage of Tech & Social Media in small town America and I am starting to believe this is one reason many small town businesses, organizations and local government have so little understanding of Technology and using this as a tool for communication and marketing…

So often those in large or major cities take for granted what they have around them…
Until they get a flat tire while on vacation out in the country and don’t get reception for their cell phones, or try to ask where an internet café is while on vacation…

Many small towns don’t have a large magazine/newspaper shop to buy Tech Magazines or an Internet Cafe…  Yes it is covered in many Business and Tech magazines and hard to ignore, but if you don’t have those magazines articles to read, it is hard to know about it…  Yes it is covered some on TV news; they refer to it almost every day now…  Many watch the nightly news while families are sitting having supper…  But do they really talk much about the Internet relating to business and how it can help?

In many small towns, the local café or restaurant is a main gathering point for small business owners…  Read the local newspaper, have a coffee, talk some with fellow business people, then go to work, then stop back for lunch or maybe supper on the way home if there is carry out…  If that local Newspaper doesn’t have a section that talks about Technology, what news of Technology or Social Media’s with it’s use in business is a small town local business person going to hear about?

It isn’t like the local Walmart has a good Tech magazine or book area…  And lets be honest, how many small business people really read much about Technology in Small Town America?  In my home town without a stoplight, if I ask local Business Owners if they use Social Media for their Business and ask if they have a website, many don’t even have an e-mail account, let alone know how to add an attachment to it…  They are business owners just trying to keep their heads above water in making enough money to get by month to month as if they are still using the same methods of marketing as where used in the 50’s-70’s…

Small Town America tends to be way behind the curve for cable TV in the past- now they are struggling to even attempt to catch up with Cable Companies offering this new found information technology…  Even now, many in rural areas still don’t have cable or DSL as a choice to get online…  A friend of mine on Twitter said that 26% of America still doesn’t have high bandwidth as a choice, with dial-up being their only method of getting online…

Recently I wrote to ask some local Newspapers if they might be interested in my reporting about some of the largest New and Social Media Conferences in the country, and they just weren’t interested…  I offered to interview some of the best people in Social Media and Marketing online adding the use of Twitter and Facebook for Business… Two of the newspapers are part of the Gannett News conglomerate and they where just going to rely on the reporters the Gannett News has covering the Event…  So there will be no articles about these major business marketing and advertising conferences or the people that are respected in the industry they considered to be news worthy for their readers in Social Media…  So much for local news papers informing their readers…

I am sure from reading this newspaper my whole life, an article might be printed of the numbers of people and a few tech devices that where the buzz of the convention, but nothing about how it could help small town business…  Doing a search I wasn’t able to find any mentions of the large Social Media Events like South by South West Conference or Blogworld Expo- two of the largest New Media and Social Media Conferences in the country…  So Small Town America near me received no news to read about these events…

There has been no articles about how 54% of Business Websites get more sales if they have a Blog connected to their website…  Only articles about user base is reported of major Social Media services like FaceBook or Twitter, but even that is rarely covered in small town newspapers…  There was nothing about Foursquare or Gowalla- location-based social networking services covered in the local newspapers in my area in…

One such newspaper in a city that has over 30,000 College students in it and a county population of 101,136 people…  I just did a search in this local city newspaper 20 miles from my town, where close to half my town population works…  I searches for the words “Social Media” and got a result of 9 articles with these words in it in the past year…  Twitter had 19 articles and 46 articles with Facebook in them, the iPad had three articles, the iPhone had eight articles- these words where searched in their archives over the last year…  So with so few articles and many having only a reference to someone else using Social Media, how do small Business Owners learn about this amazing form of Marketing, Advertising and Communications and E-Commerce?

So maybe part of the problem of the Digital Divide in Small Town America is really the lack of news coverage the local news agencies give to Social Media and what news the local Business owners receive… With local News not covering Social Media, it is costing our local Businesses the needed information about using New Media in business, costing them jobs and money…

Misuse of Terms for Social Media- Expert and Guru…

It often makes me shake my head at the number of people calling themselves “Expert or Guru”… I have over the last few years been studying, incorporating and keeping up to date some with Social Media, Technology and the many different file formats that are on the Internet… It astounds me how many misuse these many file formats and the set ups and use of Social Media, when there are true professionals out there that do understand the many uses… Problem is, there are a lot people that are trying to sell him or herself as being an “Expert” or “Guru” of these new media types of communication…

Wikipedia:
An expert is someone widely recognized as a reliable source of technique or skill whose faculty for judging or deciding rightly, justly, or wisely is accorded authority and status by their peers or the public in a specific well-distinguished domain. An expert, more generally, is a person with extensive knowledge or ability based on research, experience, or occupation and in a particular area of study. An expert can be, by virtue of credential, training, education, profession, publication or experience, believed to have special knowledge of a subject beyond that of the average person, sufficient that others may officially (and legally) rely upon the individual’s opinion. Historically, an expert was referred to as a sage (Sophos). The individual was usually a profound thinker distinguished for wisdom and sound judgment.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expert

First I would say if someone were stating they are an “Expert” or “Guru”, stop and wonder if they truly are… Look at their numbers on Twitter, FaceBook and their reputations, who are they following and follow them… Look at their blog and websites, what truly warrant’s their being good at Social Media- do they have awards… And then ask yourself Are they really what they say they are, or are they just using “Buzz Words” to entice you to think they are an “Expert or Guru” of Social Media…

During the 90’s, I had a chance to see the upcoming popularity of computers hitting desktops all over the world. Along with this also came the possibility of people being able to print their own materials, what they called “Desktop Publishing”. But being an artist that also is an Illustrator and Graphic Designer, I had the chance to see so many miss use this term, often they just printing out a brochure or two or a catalog they started calling themselves Desktop Publishers, and if you where to ask a real Printer about their view, get ready for some Sailor type cussing, as they ended up having to do the Real work that Graphic Designers normally did, with getting things Truly Ready for the Printer… What is the Difference Between Graphic Design and Desktop Publishing- http://desktoppub.about.com/od/professional/f/gd_vs_dtp.htm

I have seen many websites that people have charged professional prices for, that end up being online web design software, using templates and the client’s text and a couple of photos with lots of clip art and charged HUGE amounts of money… One as an example was a local Professional Attorney who had paid for a web designer to design his business website, little did he know, the person used an online web design service with templates and used clip art… Something I could do in an hour or two of sipping coffee, but to charge $900 for that, I feel the lawyer was ripped off, and didn’t hire a true professional… Just because you buy the tools of the trade, doesn’t mean you’re a professional…

I have been doing Social media since before it had that title, using Chat in 1989 when Chat was mostly between universities and then after graduation in 94 when it was called eWorld and then changed to TalkCity… I was able to start to get free-lance design work and web design work through chatting, and my knowledge of web design… But even though that puts me in the 20 years of experience in using the internet and Social Media, I do not refer to my self as “Expert or Guru”, and find those “Professionals” and I use the term loosely, a sign they are just using a Key Phrase to attract people to think they are expert… My grandfather taught classical Organ music at Julliard for over 40 years, but never called himself an Expert though many referred to him as a Master or expert of classical Organ music…

Recently I received an invite to a Social Media event, where there are a few panelists speaking on their use of software and time on social media… Granted they all did have kinds of business that relate them as being Professionals in their fields, but I wouldn’t call this group “Expert or Guru”, do to the fact that of the 150 million people on Twitter, all of them had less then 800, and even less on Twitter… My girlfriend’s daughter who just graduated from High School in a town of only two stoplights has more followers…

So look at the numbers of followers remember that Twitter allows you to follow 2000 people before they set a 10% follower ratio to it… FaceBook, if the person is using a “Friend Page and not a Fan page, difference being the choice of a “Like Button”, they are setting up their professional area in the wrong way… All business and Organizations are suppose to by the rules of FaceBook set up a Fan Page and group pages, and not Personal pages for doing business… Personal Friend pages are just as they state, Personal and not for doing business on… it is one thing to link to your business, but FaceBook Rules state all business should be done via their more professional area… You can read the official Difference by FaceBook here: http://www.facebook.com/help/?ref=pf#!/help/?faq=12850

More often, those who are truly an Expert in Social Media, don’t use this phrase, they just advertise they are Marketers in Social media or consultants, but try to include on who can also include a Social Media Plan of action… This can include the use of Blog/s, Video, Twitter, FaceBook and possibly a few other services to link to your Main Business Website…

Remember too, a Blog is not a website and if they aren’t able to describe and explain the difference you should also wonder of their experience- the major point here is security- Blogs aren’t very secure, though you can link to secure areas for ordering, they still aren’t very secure… The simplest HTML website is the most secure… If a person doesn’t not include a Blog, twitter, FaceBook fan page, and possibly a few other 2.0 Web applications that link to your main Business website, they probably aren’t an expert at all, even if they might have lots of number followers…

Using TweepSearch, there are in Twitter over 17,000 people that have “Expert” and over 9,000 have “Guru” in their profile… If a person states in their website they are an expert and don’t have more then 2000 people following them, they really are a beginner at using this new media…

Beware of those who call themselves Expert or Guru in Social Media…

Foursquare Partners with VisitPA

VisitPA & Foursquare Become Partners

Pennsylvania state’s official tourism website, VisitPA has partnered with Foursquare to help it’s tourism, their the FIRST state to partner with a location based Application to help attract tourism…

Foursquare is a fairly new Tech start-up in New York City and the city Mayor Bloomberg wants more start-up tech firms in NYC, but New York State’s Tourism Department can’t even figure out the great opportunity it has of it’s own businesses within it’s state…  Pennsylvania’s Tourism Department isn’t the first to partner with Foursquare; the city of Chicago’s Tourism Department also recently announced this too…

So Pennsylvania is now jumping ahead of many other states in being the first to attract tourism to come to their beautiful state using a Location Based Application such as Foursquare…  I tip my hat to the person who came up with this idea to partner with Foursquare, he or she deserves a raise!!!

These Location Based Applications are becoming very popular with Smartphone users…  Foursquare has a user base of over 1 million users, Gowalla over 150,000 users and maybe that isn’t huge numbers with over 45.5 million people in the United States who own SmartPhones -“Yet”, but both Location Based Applications companies are still new and growing daily…  Kind of hard to ignore these kind of numbers and with the recent sales that have been going on of iPhones in Walmart selling the iPhone 3Gs, there will be even more and more users soon to be using these location based applications…  SmartPhones are no longer being just the used and owned by the financial or technical elite…

I wrote some of in a past Article; “Is Rural Business ready for Foursquare and Gowalla Location Based Applications?” In how businesses and small towns not having good or any websites to support users of location based applications on SmartPhones such as Foursquare or Gowalla…  All states have a tourism department and most counties and cities do too even small towns have a website highlighting their local activities…  If you’re a web site designer you need to help these small towns and the businesses within them catch up to the times of the Internet, a very good opportunity for a new website designer and also experienced web designers…

If you’re a restaurant, hotel or a business that relies on tourism, you would be a fool not to hire a GOOD website designer that can both design you a well designed and functional working website and add for you these location based application advertising for your business to attract customers and clients…
